BYU Linebacker AJ Vongphachanh Poised for Breakout Senior Season
After a solid 2024 campaign, BYU linebacker AJ Vongphachanh is drawing major attention heading into his senior season—and for good reason. The versatile defender, who transferred from Utah State, has quickly become a key piece of the Cougars’ defense, and coaches believe 2025 could be his breakout year.
Vongphachanh made an immediate impact last season with his athleticism, football IQ, and physicality. He finished the year among the team leaders in tackles and proved effective both in pass coverage and against the run. This spring, he’s taken another step forward—both as a leader and a playmaker.
“AJ’s playing with a different level of confidence now,” said defensive coordinator Jay Hill. “He’s vocal, fast, and instinctive. He sees plays develop before they happen.”
During spring practices, Vongphachanh has been everywhere—disrupting screens, filling gaps, and covering tight ends with precision. His improved communication skills have also been a major plus for a defense that’s growing more aggressive under Hill’s system.
Teammates have taken notice as well. Fellow linebacker Ben Bywater called him “the heartbeat of the linebacker group,” adding that Vongphachanh’s preparation and energy have elevated the entire unit.
Off the field, Vongphachanh has embraced his role as a mentor to younger players. He’s often seen coaching up underclassmen and pushing the group to be more disciplined and detail-oriented.
For a BYU defense looking to assert itself in the Big 12, Vongphachanh’s senior presence could make a massive difference. His ability to lead by example—and deliver impact plays—could help the Cougars take a significant step forward.
If spring is any indication, AJ Vongphachanh is set to leave his mark in Provo with a season that both fans and scouts will remember.
