BYU QB Jake Retzlaff Shows Improved Accuracy and Command in Spring Practices
Heading into the 2025 season, all eyes are on BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff, and by all accounts, he’s rising to the occasion. After flashes of brilliance in 2024, Retzlaff has taken noticeable steps forward in spring practices, showing improved accuracy, decision-making, and confidence as he leads the Cougar offense.
Retzlaff, who transferred from junior college in 2023, spent last season adjusting to the speed and complexity of the Big 12. Now, with a full season under his belt and the starting job firmly in his grasp, he’s operating with poise and command during team drills and scrimmages.
“Jake has taken full ownership of this offense,” said offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick. “He’s sharper with his reads, throwing with more anticipation, and leading the huddle like a true veteran.”
One of the biggest improvements has been Retzlaff’s accuracy in the short-to-intermediate passing game. In spring scrimmages, he’s consistently hit receivers in stride, allowing for more yards after the catch. His timing with wideouts like Kody Epps and Keanu Hill has also improved, helping the offense run more fluidly.
Retzlaff credits the improvement to countless hours of offseason film study and throwing sessions with teammates. “I knew I had to take a leap this year,” Retzlaff said. “We’ve got the weapons, and I want to be the guy that gets the ball in their hands the right way.”
Head coach Kalani Sitake has praised Retzlaff’s work ethic and leadership, calling him a “difference-maker” for the 2025 campaign.
If his progress continues through fall camp, Retzlaff could be the key to BYU’s offensive resurgence—and perhaps one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the Big 12 this season.
