BYU Quarterback Jake Retzlaff Confident and Focused Ahead of 2025 Season
After an up-and-down debut season in 2024, BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff enters the 2025 campaign with a renewed sense of confidence and determination. The senior signal-caller has spent the offseason fine-tuning his mechanics, developing chemistry with his receivers, and working closely with the coaching staff to take his game to the next level.
Retzlaff, who started several games in 2024 after an early-season quarterback shuffle, showed flashes of brilliance but also struggled with consistency. He threw for 1,800 yards and 11 touchdowns but also battled turnovers and accuracy issues. Now, with a full offseason under his belt and a clear role as the starting quarterback, heโs looking to deliver a breakout year in Provo.
โIโm locked in,โ Retzlaff said during spring media availability. โI know whatโs expected of me, and Iโm ready to lead this offense. Weโve got weapons all over the field, and I trust the guys around me.โ
Head coach Kalani Sitake praised Retzlaffโs growth, saying, โJakeโs taken big stridesโhis leadership, command of the offense, and decision-making have all improved. Heโs putting in the work, and itโs showing.โ
Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick added that Retzlaff has become much more comfortable in BYUโs system, particularly with pre-snap reads and progressions. โHeโs really taken ownership of this offense,โ Roderick said.
Retzlaff will have a talented supporting cast, including standout wide receiver Darius Lassiter and a strong offensive line. With Big 12 competition looming, the senior quarterback knows heโll need to be sharpโbut heโs embracing the challenge.
If Retzlaff can translate his offseason improvements into in-game success, BYU could surprise opponents and make a serious push in the conference. Cougar fans are hopeful heโll be the steady hand guiding the offense in 2025.
