BYU Quarterback Jake Retzlaff Confident and Focused Ahead of 2025 Season
After an up-and-down debut season in 2024, BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff enters the 2025 campaign with a renewed sense of confidence and determination. The senior signal-caller has spent the offseason fine-tuning his mechanics, developing chemistry with his receivers, and working closely with the coaching staff to take his game to the next level.
Retzlaff, who started several games in 2024 after an early-season quarterback shuffle, showed flashes of brilliance but also struggled with consistency. He threw for 1,800 yards and 11 touchdowns but also battled turnovers and accuracy issues. Now, with a full offseason under his belt and a clear role as the starting quarterback, he’s looking to deliver a breakout year in Provo.
“I’m locked in,” Retzlaff said during spring media availability. “I know what’s expected of me, and I’m ready to lead this offense. We’ve got weapons all over the field, and I trust the guys around me.”
Head coach Kalani Sitake praised Retzlaff’s growth, saying, “Jake’s taken big strides—his leadership, command of the offense, and decision-making have all improved. He’s putting in the work, and it’s showing.”
Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick added that Retzlaff has become much more comfortable in BYU’s system, particularly with pre-snap reads and progressions. “He’s really taken ownership of this offense,” Roderick said.
Retzlaff will have a talented supporting cast, including standout wide receiver Darius Lassiter and a strong offensive line. With Big 12 competition looming, the senior quarterback knows he’ll need to be sharp—but he’s embracing the challenge.
If Retzlaff can translate his offseason improvements into in-game success, BYU could surprise opponents and make a serious push in the conference. Cougar fans are hopeful he’ll be the steady hand guiding the offense in 2025.
