BYU Freshman Running Back LJ Martin Poised for Breakout Season After Explosive Spring
LJ Martin, the highly touted freshman running back for BYU, is quickly emerging as one of the most exciting young talents in Provo. After a standout spring camp that turned heads within the program and drew buzz from national analysts, Martin is now being pegged as a breakout star for the 2025 season.
Martin, who arrived on campus with a solid high school resume and a reputation for being both explosive and reliable, wasted no time showing what he could do. During BYU’s spring scrimmages, he consistently broke off big runs, displayed impressive vision, and showcased the kind of balance and power that makes coaches take notice. His ability to run between the tackles and bounce outside has made him a perfect fit for BYU’s multi-dimensional run game.
“He’s everything we hoped for and more,” said BYU head coach Kalani Sitake. “He’s coachable, he’s tough, and he wants to be great. That combination is rare, especially in a true freshman.”
Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick also praised Martin’s work ethic and rapid adjustment to the college game. “He’s picking up blitz protection and reading blocks like a veteran,” Roderick noted. “That’s what sets him apart.”
Veteran teammates have also taken notice. Senior offensive lineman Connor Pay said, “LJ hits the hole hard and makes us look good. He’s the real deal.”
As BYU gears up for its second full season in the Big 12, Martin could be a key weapon in the offense. With his early production and the coaching staff’s confidence behind him, Martin is expected to earn significant carries from day one.
If spring was any indication, Cougar fans can expect LJ Martin to be a major part of the team’s success this fall—and for seasons to come.
