Otega Oweh Poised for Breakout Season with Kentucky Wildcats
As the Kentucky Wildcats gear up for the 2024–25 basketball season, all eyes are on sophomore guard Otega Oweh, who is expected to take on a larger role under head coach Mark Pope. After transferring from Oklahoma, Oweh is entering the season with high expectations from both fans and staff, positioning himself as a key contributor on both ends of the court.
Oweh, a 6-foot-5 athletic guard, showed flashes of brilliance during his time with the Sooners. Known for his elite defense, slashing ability, and explosive athleticism, he averaged 11.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game last season while shooting an efficient 47% from the field. Now in Lexington, he’s determined to elevate his game even further.
“I’m ready to take that next step,” Oweh said during a summer training session. “Coach Pope has already challenged me to be more vocal, to lead on the court, and to lock in defensively every possession.”
Coach Pope has praised Oweh for his versatility and intensity, qualities that align well with Kentucky’s new identity. With a mix of veteran leadership and talented newcomers, Oweh’s experience and energy will be critical, especially in tight SEC matchups.
“He’s the kind of player who changes the pace of a game with one play—whether it’s a steal, a put-back dunk, or a stop in crunch time,” Pope noted. “He’s got the edge we need.”
Oweh is also working on expanding his perimeter game, aiming to become a more consistent three-point shooter to complement his driving and defensive prowess. If he succeeds, the Wildcats could have a two-way star in the making.
With increased responsibility and the hunger to prove himself, Otega Oweh is poised for a breakout season—one that could help propel Kentucky back into national championship contention.
