Broderick Jones Talks About His “Funky” Responsibilities for Steelers This Season
Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Broderick Jones has been turning heads, not just for his performance on the field, but for his candid comments about his evolving role in the team’s offense. Entering the 2024 season, Jones finds himself in what he describes as a “funky” position—one that’s pushed him to grow and adapt in new ways.
After being drafted in the first round in 2023, many expected Jones to quickly lock down a starting spot at left tackle. However, the Steelers’ coaching staff has taken a more strategic approach, moving him around the offensive line to meet team needs. From right tackle to filling in during jumbo packages, Jones has been asked to take on responsibilities outside the traditional scope of his position.
“It’s a little funky,” Jones said with a laugh in a recent interview. “But I’m learning a lot. I’m just trying to help the team however I can.”
While some might view the shifting roles as a setback, Jones sees it as an opportunity. The 6’5″, 311-pound lineman has embraced the challenge, working closely with offensive line coach Pat Meyer to sharpen his technique and improve his versatility. His adaptability is quickly becoming one of his biggest assets.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin praised Jones for his maturity and team-first mentality, noting that his flexibility gives the Steelers valuable options as they navigate injuries and lineup changes.
As the season progresses, Jones’ role may continue to evolve, but one thing is clear: he’s committed to doing whatever it takes to contribute. “At the end of the day, I’m here to play football,” he said. “Wherever they need me, that’s where I’ll be.”
His attitude and work ethic could make all the difference in Pittsburgh’s playoff pu
sh this year.
