The Pittsburgh Steelers have released former BYU defensive end Blake Mangelson during the first week of Organized Team Activities (OTAs), concluding his brief tenure with the team.
Mangelson, who joined the Steelers as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 NFL Draft, had previously accepted a rookie minicamp invitation from the Minnesota Vikings but opted to sign with Pittsburgh after receiving a contract offer. His release comes amid a crowded defensive line roster, with the Steelers having added several new players through the draft and free agency.
During his collegiate career at BYU, Mangelson appeared in 41 games, starting 16 of them. He amassed 82 tackles, including 12 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, along with four passes defensed and one interception. In his senior year, he recorded 37 tackles, six tackles for loss, and two sacks.
At the Big 12 Pro Day, Mangelson showcased his athleticism by running a 5.01-second 40-yard dash, completing 22 bench press reps, and recording a 7.56-second three-cone drill.
Despite his release, Mangelson’s performance at BYU and his physical attributes may attract interest from other NFL teams seeking depth on the defensive line. The Steelers, meanwhile, continue to adjust their roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
