Jon Scheyer Named 2025 John McLendon National Coach of the Year
Duke men’s basketball head coach Jon Scheyer has been named the 2025 John McLendon National Coach of the Year, recognizing his incredible leadership and success during the 2024–25 NCAA season. In only his third year at the helm, Scheyer guided the Blue Devils to a remarkable 35–3 record, an ACC regular season and tournament title sweep, and a trip to the Final Four.
Following the legendary tenure of Mike Krzyzewski, Scheyer faced enormous expectations when he took over in 2022. Yet, under his direction, Duke has quickly reasserted itself as one of the nation’s elite programs. His 2024–25 squad, headlined by phenom freshman Cooper Flagg, was dominant on both ends of the floor, consistently ranked in the top 5 nationally throughout the season.
What makes this honor particularly impressive is Scheyer’s ability to blend top-tier talent with player development and strategic excellence. Known for his calm demeanor and basketball IQ, Scheyer implemented a fast-paced offense and a smothering defense that overwhelmed opponents. His work off the court has also drawn praise, as he continues to foster a strong team culture and recruit high-character athletes.
The John McLendon Award, named after the legendary coach who broke racial barriers in college sports, honors coaches who not only excel in wins and losses but also demonstrate leadership and integrity. Scheyer’s commitment to Duke’s values and his players’ success on and off the court makes him a fitting recipient.
As Scheyer continues to build his own legacy, this award cements his status as one of the top young coaches in the game. With elite recruits continuing to flock to Durham, the future looks bright for Duke basketball under Jon Scheyer’s watch.
