J.J. McCarthy Speaks Candidly on Justin Jefferson’s OTA Presence
Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy is already learning what it means to be a leader in the NFL—and part of that includes recognizing the importance of star players showing up when it matters. Speaking to reporters after a recent OTA (Organized Team Activities) session, McCarthy gave an honest take on wide receiver Justin Jefferson’s involvement, and what it means for the team.
“Having Justin here changes everything,” McCarthy said. “He doesn’t have to be here—everyone knows what he’s capable of—but the fact that he is says a lot about who he is as a teammate and leader.”
Jefferson’s participation in voluntary OTAs has become a talking point this offseason, especially as contract discussions loom and the Vikings look to usher in a new era with McCarthy at the helm. While many veteran stars around the league opt to skip OTAs, Jefferson’s presence is sending a powerful message—not only to the coaching staff, but to his young quarterback.
“For me, it’s invaluable,” McCarthy added. “He’s one of the best in the league, and getting to build chemistry with him this early is a dream. You can already feel the standard he brings to the field.”
The rookie also praised Jefferson’s mentorship and approachability. “He’s vocal, but not overbearing. He leads by example. That makes it easy for someone like me to step in and grow.”
McCarthy’s comments reflect growing optimism in Minnesota as the franchise transitions into a new phase built around its dynamic offensive weapons and fresh talent at quarterback. With Jefferson showing up and McCarthy showing maturity beyond his years, the Vikings’ future may be brighter than many anticipated.
If early signs mean anything, the Jefferson–McCarthy connection could be one to watch—and one the Vikings will lean on in 2025 and beyond.
