East Lansing, MI — In a move that has ignited excitement across the Michigan State basketball community, former Spartan legend and Hall of Famer Shawn Respert is making a triumphant return to East Lansing—this time, as a member of Tom Izzo’s coaching staff.
Michigan State University announced today that Respert, who still holds the title of the program’s all-time leading scorer, will be joining the men’s basketball program as a special assistant and player development coach. This unexpected homecoming marks the first time Respert has officially returned to the MSU basketball program since his storied collegiate career ended in 1995.
Respert played under coach Jud Heathcote from 1990 to 1995, amassing 2,531 career points—still the most in school history. Known for his lethal shooting, leadership, and unmatched work ethic, Respert was the Big Ten Player of the Year in 1995 and a consensus First-Team All-American. His jersey, No. 24, hangs in the rafters at the Breslin Center as a testament to his legacy.
“It feels like coming full circle,” said Respert at the press conference. “MSU has always been home. Coach Izzo and I have remained close through the years, and the opportunity to mentor these young men—just as I was mentored—means everything to me.”
Respert’s career took him to the NBA as the 8th overall pick in the 1995 draft, followed by several seasons overseas and, later, years in player development and scouting roles with NBA teams including the Houston Rockets and the Memphis Grizzlies. His battle with stomach cancer, which he bravely kept private during his playing days, only further endeared him to fans for his toughness and resilience.
Coach Tom Izzo, who was an assistant under Jud Heathcote during Respert’s playing days and became head coach in 1995, expressed his joy at reuniting with one of the program’s all-time greats.
“Shawn is not only one of the greatest players to ever wear the Green and White, but also one of the finest people I’ve ever coached,” Izzo said. “His knowledge, professionalism, and passion for Spartan basketball are exactly what our program needs as we continue to evolve.”
Respert’s role will primarily focus on mentoring players both on and off the court, with an emphasis on shooting, leadership development, and navigating the demands of high-level college athletics.
Fans can expect to see Respert on the sidelines at the Breslin Center this fall, as the Spartans gear up for another run under Coach Izzo, who continues to build on his legendary legacy with the help of familiar Spartan faces.
