Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman is expected to miss significant time due to a strained right quadriceps muscle, an injury reminiscent of a similar setback he experienced in 2021 that sidelined him for nearly two months. The injury occurred during the fifth inning of Friday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, when Bregman pulled up after rounding first base on a single off the Green Monster. He exited the game under his own power but was visibly limping.
Manager Alex Cora confirmed the severity of the injury, stating, “It’s a significant injury. He’s going to be out for a while. Very similar to ’21.” As a result, Bregman has been placed on the 10-day injured list, and no definitive timeline has been set for his return.
In response to Bregman’s absence, the Red Sox have called up top prospect Marcelo Mayer from Triple-A Worcester. Mayer, originally a shortstop, is expected to fill in at third base. In his MLB debut, Mayer went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, but his promotion marks a significant step in his promising career.
Bregman, who signed a three-year, $120 million contract with Boston in February after nine seasons with the Houston Astros, has been a key contributor this season, batting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs in 51 games. His absence poses a considerable challenge for the Red Sox as they navigate a critical stretch of the season.
