CONGRATULATIONS: Tom Osborne Honored with National Football Foundation Gold Medal
In a momentous recognition of a lifetime dedicated to excellence, leadership, and impact, former Nebraska Cornhuskers football coach Tom Osborne has been awarded the National Football Foundation (NFF) Gold Medal, the organization’s highest honor. This prestigious accolade celebrates Osborne’s outstanding contribution to the game of football, both on and off the field.
A true legend of the sport, Osborne coached Nebraska from 1973 to 1997, compiling an astonishing 255–49–3 record over 25 seasons. Under his guidance, the Cornhuskers won three national championships (1994, 1995, 1997) and 13 conference titles, establishing a dynasty built on discipline, innovation, and integrity. His teams were renowned for their physicality, sportsmanship, and consistency—qualities that became synonymous with the Nebraska brand.
Beyond the Xs and Os, Osborne’s influence extended far beyond the gridiron. After retiring from coaching, he served as a U.S. Congressman and later as Nebraska’s athletic director, all while co-founding the TeamMates Mentoring Program, which has positively impacted thousands of young lives across the Midwest.
The NFF Gold Medal is reserved for individuals who embody the values of scholarship, citizenship, and leadership—criteria Osborne has exceeded throughout his illustrious career. Previous recipients include U.S. presidents, military leaders, and sports icons.
