Hailing from Ellijay, Georgia, McVey currently plays for Overtime Elite in Atlanta after transferring from Gilmer High School. During his junior season, he averaged 26.2 points, 15.7 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game .
McVey chose Georgia over offers from Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Stanford.
