CONGRATULATIONS: Tom Osborne, Former Nebraska cornhuskers Football Coach, Awarded the Prestigious National Football Foundation Gold Medal for Outstanding Contribution to the Game of Football….

Legendary former Nebraska Cornhuskers football coach Tom Osborne has been honored with one of the most prestigious awards in American sports: the National Football Foundation (NFF) Gold Medal. This recognition celebrates Osborne’s lifetime of achievement and extraordinary contribution to the game of football, both on and off the field. As one of the most respected figures in college football history, Osborne’s selection is a testament to his legacy of leadership, integrity, and success.

The NFF Gold Medal is awarded to individuals who exemplify the qualities of scholarship, citizenship, and leadership. Past recipients include U.S. presidents, military heroes, and icons in business and sports. Osborne joins an elite list of honorees, but few are as deserving given the breadth of his influence on college football and American life.

Tom Osborne served as Nebraska’s head football coach from 1973 to 1997, compiling an extraordinary record of 255 wins, 49 losses, and 3 ties. During his 25-year tenure, he led the Cornhuskers to three national championships (1994, 1995, 1997), 13 conference titles, and 25 consecutive bowl appearances. Known for his calm demeanor, strategic brilliance, and unwavering commitment to his players, Osborne built a powerhouse program that became synonymous with discipline, toughness, and consistency.

But Osborne’s impact stretches far beyond the win column. He emphasized academic success, character development, and community service, setting a standard for what college football programs should aspire to be. Under his leadership, Nebraska regularly ranked among the nation’s top programs for academic achievement, and many of his players graduated and went on to successful careers both in and out of football.

After retiring from coaching, Osborne continued to serve his state and country. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served Nebraska’s 3rd congressional district from 2001 to 2007. Following his political career, Osborne returned to the University of Nebraska as Athletic Director, overseeing a successful transition into the Big Ten Conference and further strengthening the university’s athletic programs.

Perhaps most notably, Osborne founded the TeamMates Mentoring Program, a non-profit organization that connects young students with adult mentors to help guide them academically and personally. The program now serves thousands of youth across multiple states and is a reflection of Osborne’s lifelong commitment to education and character-building.

Receiving the NFF Gold Medal is a fitting tribute to a man who has given so much to the game of football and to the lives it touches. It not only honors Osborne’s coaching excellence but also acknowledges his role as a mentor, educator, statesman, and humanitarian.

In an era when college sports often wrestle with issues of integrity and commercialism, Tom Osborne remains a beacon of what leadership in athletics should look like. His career stands as proof that success and honor can go hand in hand. Congratulations to Coach Osborne on this well-earned and richly deserved recognition — a true giant in the history of the game.
