Cody Zeller, the former Indiana Hoosiers standout and 2011 Indiana Mr. Basketball, is returning to Indiana University as an assistant coach. Head coach Darian DeVries praised Zeller’s impact on the program and believes his NBA experience will greatly benefit the team.

Zeller’s Legacy at Indiana

Cody Zeller’s return to Indiana is a homecoming of sorts. As a high school star at Washington High School in Indiana, Zeller was named Mr. Basketball in 2011, an honor given to the state’s top high school player. He then played two seasons at Indiana University, where he was a key figure in the team’s resurgence. During his time with the Hoosiers, Zeller averaged 16.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, earning First Team All-Big Ten honors and leading the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances. His leadership and performance helped elevate Indiana’s basketball program back to national prominence.

Transition to the NBA

After his successful college career, Zeller was selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats, now known as the Charlotte Hornets. Over his NBA career, Zeller played for several teams, including the Portland Trail Blazers, Miami Heat, and New Orleans Pelicans. He was known for his solid rebounding, efficient scoring, and basketball IQ. Zeller’s experience in the NBA has provided him with a deep understanding of the game at the highest level.

Return to Indiana as Assistant Coach

Now, Zeller is bringing his wealth of experience back to Indiana University, this time as an assistant coach. Head coach Darian DeVries, who took over the program in March 2025, expressed his enthusiasm about Zeller’s return. “Cody’s journey from Indiana high school basketball to the NBA is a testament to his work ethic and basketball acumen,” said DeVries. “His experience will be invaluable in mentoring our players and helping them develop both on and off the court.”

Impact on the Program

Zeller’s addition to the coaching staff is expected to have a significant impact on the Indiana basketball program. His firsthand experience in both college and professional basketball allows him to offer unique insights into player development, game strategy, and the mental aspects of the game. Players will benefit from his guidance, learning how to navigate the challenges of competitive basketball and how to maximize their potential.

Looking Ahead

As Indiana University looks to build upon its rich basketball tradition, Cody Zeller’s return as an assistant coach represents a strategic move to blend experience with youthful energy. With Zeller’s mentorship, the Hoosiers are poised to continue their ascent in college basketball, aiming for success in the Big Ten and beyond.
