Senior guard Cormac Ryan showed his support for teammate RJ Davis following the first-seeded North Carolina team’s 89-87 loss to fourth-seeded Alabama in the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16 on Thursday night. Davis struggled terribly from the field.
When Davis was questioned about his subpar performance, Ryan reportedly replied the following, according to Andrew Carter of the Raleigh News & Observer:
With 21.2 points per game this season, Davis led North Carolina in scoring and was named the ACC Player of the Year. However, on Thursday, he shot just 4-of-20 from the field and 0-for-9 from beyond the arc, while finishing with 16 points and seven assists.
Since 2020, the 22-year-old Davis has been a vital member of the Tar Heels’ squad, and he was a major factor in their run to the National Championship Game the previous two seasons.
Davis’ breakthrough year is a major factor in North Carolina’s comeback to secure a 1-seed this season after missing the NCAA tournament the previous year.
Although Davis’ time at UNC ended less than perfectly, he will be remembered as one of the most productive athletes in of the most effective players in the program’s history.
