Watch for These Returning BYU Stars to Break Out This Year

As the new college football season approaches, excitement is building in Provo. BYU football is looking to bounce back with a stronger performance in the Big 12, and a key part of that resurgence will come from familiar faces ready to take the next step. Several returning players have shown flashes of greatness in previous seasons and now look poised to break out and become central figures in BYU’s success this year.

1. LJ Martin – Running Back
As a freshman, LJ Martin led the team in rushing yards and quickly earned the trust of coaches with his vision, speed, and toughness. After a year of experience and a full offseason in the weight room, Martin could become one of the most dynamic backs in the Big 12. With improved offensive line play and more consistent quarterbacking, Martin has the tools to rush for over 1,000 yards this season.

2. Kody Epps – Wide Receiver
Injuries hampered Kody Epps last season, but when healthy, he’s been one of BYU’s most explosive weapons. Epps has elite quickness and the ability to create separation against top defensive backs. If he can stay on the field, he could emerge as the go-to target in the passing game. His chemistry with the quarterback and route-running precision make him a threat in both the slot and outside.

3. Tyler Batty – Defensive End
Batty has been a consistent contributor on the defensive line, but this could be the year he puts it all together. With added strength and experience, he’s ready to become a dominant pass rusher and a vocal leader on defense. Batty’s ability to disrupt the backfield could be crucial to BYU’s hopes of improving their defensive consistency in the Big 12.

4. Jakob Robinson – Cornerback
Robinson had a strong 2023 campaign, finishing with multiple interceptions and big plays in key moments. Heading into 2024, he has the confidence and experience to become a true lockdown corner. With his instincts and quick reaction time, Robinson is expected to anchor the secondary and potentially earn all-conference recognition.

5. Isaac Rex – Tight End
Although Rex has already made a name for himself in BYU circles, this year could be his most productive yet. As a red-zone threat and reliable pass-catcher, Rex brings size and athleticism that make him a mismatch against linebackers and safeties. With a more pass-friendly system expected this year, Rex could see his numbers rise significantly.

These players are not new to Cougar fans, but their breakout potential this season could elevate BYU to a higher level of competitiveness in the Big 12. Each has the experience, skill, and motivation to leave a lasting impact. As the season unfolds, don’t be surprised if these names become some of the most talked-about stars in college football.
