Trey Lance, the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback, hasn’t played a down in a regular-season game yet, but Jerry Jones is hanging onto his draft position as the third overall choice in the 2021 NFL Draft.
In a trade with the San Francisco 49ers last year, the owner and general manager of the Cowboys acquired Lance, and he assured reporters that he had no regrets.
“The arrow’s really up,” stated Jones in reference to Lance. “As a character, a worker, and a person, he has surpassed expectations. He has special abilities. He’s just what we had wanted and planned for. We were aware that we would be paying the bonus immediately upon awarding the pick. That was included in the same choice. It has been reaffirmed.
Lance finished as Dallas’ third-string quarterback last season, but according to Jones, the 23-year-old North Dakota State product will go up against Cooper Rush in 2024 to support starting quarterback Dak Prescott. Lance spent two seasons with the Niners, appearing in just eight games with a 2-2 record, four starts, and no wins.
As a result of our gaming experience, we no longer have any knowledge on the field. We only knew about his experience in college and San Francisco when we brought him on,” Jones remarked. “We don’t know anything more than that.” “What we do know, though, is his actual performance. We are unaware of his competitive or gaming experiences, but we are aware of his practice experiences and the positive things he has accomplished there.”
