BREAKING: Penn State Lands Long-Time Target, Philadelphia DT Alert Haskell.

Penn State Nabs Coveted Philadelphia Defensive Tackle Alert Haskell

In a significant victory on the recruiting trail, the Penn State Nittany Lions have secured the commitment of Philadelphia defensive tackle Alert Haskell. The highly sought-after prospect from St. Joseph’s Prep announced his decision Friday, marking a successful conclusion to a recruitment that spanned nearly two years. Haskell chose Penn State over a final list of contenders that included Big Ten rival Michigan, as well as Duke and Syracuse.

The 6-foot-4, 265-pound Haskell is considered a consensus three-star recruit and a top player in the state of Pennsylvania. His commitment bolsters Penn State’s 2026 recruiting class, which now stands at 16 members and remains ranked among the top in the nation. Haskell is the third defensive lineman to join the class, alongside defensive end Daniel Jennings and defensive tackle Isaac Chukwurah.

Haskell’s relationship with Penn State’s defensive line coach Deion Barnes proved to be a crucial factor in his decision. Barnes initiated contact with Haskell early in his high school career, and the consistent belief and connection fostered over time resonated deeply with the young talent. Haskell also expressed a strong desire to represent his home city and state at a high level.

Playing for a powerhouse program like St. Joseph’s Prep, which has secured three consecutive Pennsylvania Class 6A state titles, Haskell has consistently demonstrated his impact on the defensive front since his freshman year. He possesses a versatile skillset, capable of playing either on the edge as a defensive end or inside as a defensive tackle. His strengths include an explosive initial burst off the snap, a relentless motor, and impressive power to shed blocks. He also showcases pass-rushing abilities, hinting at a high ceiling for development at the collegiate level.

Recruiting analysts highlight Haskell’s quick acceleration, ability to penetrate into the offensive backfield, and non-stop effort. While listed as a defensive end by some recruiting services, Penn State envisions Haskell primarily as a defensive tackle, where his frame and athleticism can be best utilized.

Haskell’s commitment is a significant in-state recruiting win for James Franklin and his staff, as he becomes the seventh player from Pennsylvania to pledge to the Nittany Lions in the 2026 class. This emphasis on local talent has been a hallmark of Penn State’s recruiting strategy, and landing a player from a prominent program like St. Joseph’s Prep further solidifies their efforts. Notably, Penn State’s defensive coordinator Jim Knowles is also a graduate of St. Joseph’s Prep, adding another layer of connection.

With Haskell’s addition, Penn State’s 2026 recruiting class continues to build momentum. The class features a strong blend of talent across various positions and maintains a top-tier national ranking. Haskell’s versatility and potential on the defensive line add another exciting dimension to the Nittany Lions’ future. He is expected to take his official visit to Penn State at the end of May, further solidifying his commitment and building anticipation for his arrival on campus.
