Congratulations: Duke Women’s Basketball Welcomes Back Joanne P. McCallie as First Assistant General Manager to the Executive Team

In a groundbreaking move, Duke University has officially announced the appointment of former women’s basketball head coach Joanne P. McCallie as the first-ever Assistant General Manager to the Executive Team for the women’s basketball program. The announcement marks a powerful return to Durham for McCallie, whose coaching legacy remains one of the most impactful in Blue Devils history.

McCallie served as head coach of the Duke women’s basketball team from 2007 to 2020, leading the Blue Devils to multiple ACC titles and NCAA tournament appearances. Her leadership was defined by elite recruiting, player development, and a strong culture of accountability and excellence. Now, in a new front-office role, she will work alongside the program’s leadership to guide long-term vision, player personnel strategies, and institutional partnerships.

“It feels incredible to return to a place that means so much to me,” McCallie said in a statement. “This program is built on tradition, but also bold thinking—and I’m excited to be a part of what’s next.”

The newly created role is part of Duke’s initiative to elevate women’s basketball by integrating more strategic leadership into day-to-day and long-term operations. McCallie’s deep understanding of the college landscape, along with her ties to the Duke community, make her a natural fit.

Current head coach Kara Lawson expressed full support, noting McCallie’s “wealth of experience and invaluable perspective.” The move has already generated a positive buzz among alumni, fans, and current players who recognize the significance of this full-circle moment.
