Liam Doyle was ejected in Game 2 of Tennessee baseball’s series against Auburn on Sunday afternoon. The Vols’ ace must serve a two-game suspension as a result of the ejection.
Doyle’s suspension is not official until the umpire’s submit their final report about the ejection, but the expectation is that it will be just two games. Tennessee’s 8-1 loss to Auburn in Game 3 later in the day Saturday counts towards Doyle’s suspension, so if it is just a two-game suspension as expected, he’ll be available to start next Friday’s game against Vanderbilt.Per NCAA rules, players and assistant coaches receive an automatic suspension when ejected from a game. Head coaches do not receive a suspension unless their actions are deemed excessive.
Doyle was ejected after an altercation with Auburn outfielder Bristol Carter in the bottom of the 11th. The two came face to face when Doyle tagged Carter out at home plate following a rundown. Part of both team’s benches briefly cleared when Carter voiced his displeasure with Doyle’s tag.
Tennessee’s ace was in the game to pitch the extra innings of Game 2 when it resumed Sunday afternoon. The middle game was suspended Saturday evening in the top of the 10th after Nate Snead threw one pitch in poor weather conditions.

Doyle was able to pitch on a Sunday for the first time this season because he only threw 23 pitches in the series opener that began Friday night. The game was suspended midway through the first once Doyle finished pitching. He was unable to return to the mound Saturday morning when the game resumed.
Auburn went on to win the opener 6-1. Doyle earned the loss to drop to 7-2 in his first season with the Vols. He responded by pitching two scoreless innings in the middle game to help the Vols walk off the Tigers and even the series at a game apiece. It earned Doyle his eighth win.
