The Bulldogs got seven combined shutout innings from DeLainey Everett and Raelin Chaffin to zero out Ole Miss. Starter Everett two-hit the Rebels for her 5.0 innings to get the winning decision, with Chaffin keeping the door slammed for two more turns and picking up the third save of her season.
“It was just really working hard in the bullpen and going out there like it’s the same thing as the bullpen,” Everett said. “I wasn’t stressed. I wasn’t nervous.”Taking any SEC series is a big deal. Doing it at the expense of the rival? That is an especially sweet deal for Bulldog softball.
With today’s 3-0 blanking of the visiting Rebels, Mississippi State has already clinched the regular season series after two games. The Bulldogs improved to 13-10 in SEC play and are 36-15 for the full season, which matches the highest win total to date for Coach Samantha Ricketts.
Thursday evening it was one big swing by Jessie Blaine in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two and breaking the tied tally for a 3-1 victory to get Super Bulldog Weekend started in style. On Friday, in a game moved up for weather worries, it was a pitcher’s show.Ole Miss kept it even into the fourth inning before plunking Xiane Romero in leadoff. A successful bunt and a wild pitch advanced Romero to third where she scored on Sierra Sacco’s infield single. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Nadia Barbary plated Kiarra Sells for the 3-0 lead.
