Cougars Offense Shifts Gears: Program Emphasizes Tight End Involvement in Revamped 2025 Passing Attack”

As the 2025 college football season approaches, the Cougars are preparing to unveil a retooled offensive strategy that places a renewed emphasis on the tight end position. After a 2024 campaign marked by inconsistent red zone execution and missed opportunities in the middle of the field, the coaching staff has made it a priority to better utilize their versatile and underused tight ends. The shift comes as part of a broader effort to create a more balanced and unpredictable offense.

Head coach Marcus Lane and offensive coordinator Todd Granger have both expressed confidence that increasing tight end involvement will open up the field for the entire offense. “We’ve got talent at that position, and we haven’t been taking full advantage of it,” said Lane. “Tight ends are matchup nightmares when used correctly. We’re going to make sure they’re a consistent part of the game plan this year.”

The Cougars’ tight ends were targeted on just 12% of passing plays in 2024, one of the lowest rates in their conference. Analysts and fans alike questioned the limited role of players like junior tight end Jamal Bridges, who, despite his 6’5″, 250-pound frame and sure hands, saw minimal action in key situations. This season, Bridges is expected to be a centerpiece of the offense, not only as a blocker but as a legitimate receiving threat.

Granger emphasized that the new scheme will feature more two-tight end sets, motion packages, and play-action plays designed to create mismatches. “Defenses are loading up against our wideouts, and we’ve got to make them pay for that,” he explained. “Our tight ends can stretch the field, work the seams, and help our quarterbacks get into a rhythm.”

Quarterback Tyler McCain, entering his second year as starter, has been working closely with the tight ends in spring camp, building chemistry and timing. “It’s been great to connect with those guys more consistently,” McCain said. “They give me a big, reliable target, especially in the red zone and on third downs.”

The strategy shift also aims to benefit the running game. By employing tight ends in more dynamic roles, the Cougars can disguise run and pass plays more effectively, keeping defenses off balance. Opposing linebackers will be forced to stay honest, potentially opening up lanes for returning running back CJ Haskins.

While it remains to be seen how smoothly the transition will unfold, the Cougars’ commitment to expanding their offensive identity is clear. If the tight ends can deliver on their promise and take pressure off the wide receivers, the 2025 Cougars could emerge as one of the more well-rounded and difficult offenses to defend in their conference.

“This is about evolving,” Lane concluded. “To win consistently, you’ve got to adapt — and for us, that means making the tight end a true weapon.”
