It was a day of rings for Paul Juda.
After he won a national championship with the Michigan men’s gymnastics team on Saturday night, he got engaged to his girlfriend, Reyna Guggino, at Crisler Center. Guggino is on Michigan’s women’s gymnastics team.
From the first time I saw you I thought I wanted to marry you,” said Juda, still in uniform, in front of the crowd. “You make me a better man and a better person.” He added: “I just wish I was half of the man you are,” laughing along with others once he realized his verbal mix-up.
He got down on one knee and proposed, displaying a ring inside of a box. She said yes.
It was not the first postgame proposal inside Crisler Center this year. Michigan basketball player Vladislav Goldin and his girlfriend, Camryn Vogler, got engaged after a game in February.
The Wolverines had lost that game. Juda’s big moment came after he and his teammates had won a national championship. He won the parallel bars and his final vault clinched the title.
