Michigan football adds UMass running back CJ Hester from transfer portal

Michigan worked quickly to add depth to the running back room and on Saturday received a commitment from UMass transfer CJ Hester.

The Wolverines, led by Jordan Marshall and Alabama transfer Justice Haynes, saw Ben Hall enter his name in the transfer portal last week, so adding an experienced back was among their priorities. Hester announced his move on Saturday in a social media post.

“Beyond blessed to announce my commitment to the University of Michigan,” Hester wrote, accompanied by a photo of him with Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore.

Hester, a native of Cincinnati like Marshall, ran 529 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore last season for UMass. Against Georgia, the 5-foot-11, 195-pounder rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown

In 2023, Hester played for Western Michigan. As a freshman, he played in seven games and had 29 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns.
