Michigan State football has finished spring practices under new head coach Jonathan Smith. Unlike in previous years, the Spartans canceled their traditional public spring game. The decision was made due to ongoing renovations at Spartan Stadium and the timing of the NCAA spring transfer portal window, which opened on April 16.
During this period, several players entered the transfer portal, including edge rusher Anthony Jones, who played in all 12 games last season and recorded 25 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks. Also entering the portal were walk-on defensive back DJ Kennard and long snapper Jack Carson Wentz.
Coach Smith and his staff are now focused on recruiting new talent through the transfer portal, particularly to strengthen the defensive line and offensive skill positions. This comes as the Spartans look to rebound from a tough 2024 season, where they missed bowl eligibility for the third year in a row.
The team is aiming to rebuild and improve significantly heading into the 2025 season, with a mix of returning players and new additions expected to make an impact.
