Clemson’s spring hinted at what’s improved and what still needs work. Here are some takeaways.

Clemson’s 2025 spring practices and annual spring game gave fans and coaches a preview of what to expect in the upcoming season. With a mix of returning veterans and emerging young talent, there were several encouraging signs — but also a few red flags that the Tigers will need to address before fall. Here are the key takeaways:

1. Defensive Line Looks Dangerous Again

One of the biggest positives from spring camp was the performance of the defensive line. Even with the departure of stars to the NFL, the group showed signs of elite potential. Sophomore Stephiylan Green had a breakout game, recording multiple sacks, and the depth of the unit was evident with consistent pressure on the quarterbacks throughout the scrimmage. If the front four can continue this momentum, Clemson’s defense could return to being a top-tier unit nationally.

2. Quarterback Play Still a Work in Progress

Cade Klubnik remains the starter, but his spring game performance was inconsistent. He completed just over 50% of his passes and threw two interceptions, though both were tipped balls. Backup Chris Vizzina showed flashes but hasn’t pushed Klubnik hard enough yet. Freshman Christopher Denson displayed athleticism but struggled with accuracy. If Klubnik doesn’t take a significant leap, Clemson’s offense might continue to sputter against tougher competition.

3. Young Defensive Talent is Emerging

The Tigers are reloading fast on defense. Freshmen like Peter Woods, Vic Burley, and T.J. Parker all made noticeable plays during camp. Defensive back Khalil Barnes also made headlines with a pick-six late in the spring game. With this kind of youth stepping up, the future of Clemson’s defense looks promising.

4. Special Teams Need Work

If there’s one area that clearly needs improvement, it’s special teams. There were multiple issues in the punting game, including a dropped snap and inconsistent punt distances. With Will Spiers gone, Clemson is still searching for a reliable replacement. Clean special teams play could be the difference in close ACC matchups.

5. Offensive Line Still a Question Mark

The O-line showed some improvement in technique and communication, but there’s still room to grow. The unit struggled at times against the defensive front, especially in pass protection. While leaders like Ryan Linthicum have taken charge, the group will need to gel quickly to protect Klubnik and open up the run game.

6. Secondary Showing Depth and Versatility

Players like Toriano Pride Jr., Sherrod Covil Jr., and Andrew Mukuba are helping build a versatile and deep secondary. Mukuba, in particular, stood out for his ability to switch between safety and corner seamlessly. The DB unit could be a strength, especially if the pass rush keeps the pressure on opposing QBs.

Bottom Line:

Clemson’s spring showed a team with plenty of upside — especially on defense — but one that still has offensive concerns to sort out. With the ACC race likely to be tight again, solving issues at quarterback and special teams will be key if the Tigers want to return to national contention.
