Bob Davis, the esteemed “Voice of the Jayhawks,” passed away on March 20, 2025, at the age of 80. His death occurred just a week after the passing of his wife of 53 years, Linda.
Davis’s broadcasting career began in 1968 with KAYS in Hays, Kansas, where he called American Legion baseball games and Fort Hays State athletics. In 1984, he became the play-by-play voice for the University of Kansas (KU) football and men’s basketball teams, a position he held until his retirement in 2016. During his tenure, Davis was the voice behind eight Final Four appearances and two men’s basketball national championships in 1988 and 2008.
Beyond KU, Davis expanded his reach by calling NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Fours for CBS Radio between 1990 and 1997. He also served as the play-by-play announcer for the Kansas City Royals from 1997 to 2013, working alongside Royals Hall of Fame pitcher Paul Splittorff for eleven years.
Throughout his illustrious career, Davis received numerous accolades, including being named Kansas Sportscaster of the Year 14 times. In 2016, he was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, further cementing his legacy in the state’s sports history.
Following his passing, tributes poured in from across the sports community. Kansas basketball coach Bill Self praised Davis’s skill and character, stating, “Bob was not only superior at his craft but he was also a terrific, humble and unselfish person that gave so much of himself … .” Former Kansas coach Roy Williams also honored Davis, “Bob Davis was a fantastic … . I was a new coach, and he helped me immensely.”
Davis’s family includes his son, Steven; daughter-in-law, Katie; and four grandchildren. His wife, Linda, who passed away on March 13, 2025, is survived by her husband and family.
As fans and colleagues reflect on Davis’s contributions, his voice remains synonymous with Kansas sports, capturing moments of triumph and weaving them into the fabric of the state’s athletic legacy.
