5 Alabama football players who could have breakout seasons on defense in 2025……

As the 2025 college football season approaches, the Alabama Crimson Tide’s defense is poised for a resurgence, with several players ready to make significant impacts. Here are five defensive talents who could have breakout seasons:

1. James Smith – Junior Defensive Tackle

Standing at 6’3″ and weighing 296 pounds, James Smith hails from Montgomery, Alabama. With Tim Smith’s departure to the NFL, James Smith is anticipated to step up as a dominant force on the defensive line. In the previous season, he participated in all 13 games, recording 20 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and one sack. His potential has drawn comparisons to former Alabama standout Quinnen Williams, suggesting a promising junior campaign ahead.

2. DaShawn Jones – Redshirt Senior STAR Position

At 6’0″ and 185 pounds, DaShawn Jones from Baltimore, Maryland, is set to fill the STAR position following Devonta Smith’s transfer to Notre Dame. Jones’s versatility and experience make him a prime candidate for this hybrid linebacker-defensive back role. Last season, he played in 13 games, starting one, and his increased involvement as the season progressed showcased his readiness to assume a starting position in 2025.

3. Jordan Renaud – Redshirt Sophomore Defensive Lineman

Jordan Renaud, measuring 6’4″ and 268 pounds from Sarasota, Florida, has been a quiet contributor in his initial seasons. In 12 games last season, he amassed 14 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. With Tim Smith entering the professional ranks and Jah-Marien Latham reportedly changing positions, Renaud is poised for an expanded role. His ability to pressure quarterbacks and bolster the run defense positions him well for a breakout year.

4. Jeremiah Beaman – Redshirt Freshman Defensive Lineman

Birmingham’s own Jeremiah Beaman, standing at 6’4″ and 265 pounds, has shown early promise. Despite limited playing time, his physicality and discipline have been evident. To maximize his potential, Beaman aims to add 15-20 pounds of muscle this offseason, which could elevate him to a key reserve role in Alabama’s defensive trenches.

5. Keon Keeley – Redshirt Sophomore Defensive Lineman

At 6’5″ and 277 pounds, Tampa’s Keon Keeley has faced limited playing time in his first two seasons. Despite this, the coaching staff remains optimistic about his potential. Transitioning positions and adjusting to the collegiate level have been part of his journey. With continued development, Keeley is expected to compete for significant playing time at defensive tackle in the upcoming season.

These five players are on the cusp of making substantial contributions to Alabama’s defense in 2025. Their development and performance will be pivotal as the Crimson Tide aims to maintain its defensive prowess in the competitive landscape of college football.
