David Pastrnak Talks Potentially Becoming Bruins’ Next Captain

David Pastrnak Talks Potentially Becoming Bruins’ Next Captain

As the Boston Bruins prepare for another season, one of the biggest questions lingering around the team is who will step up as the next captain. With the departure of Zdeno Chara, the iconic leader who held the captaincy for over a decade, the Bruins have been without a designated captain since 2020. Now, star winger David Pastrnak is weighing in on the possibility of assuming the role himself, reflecting on what it would mean to carry that responsibility for a franchise with such a rich history.

In a recent interview, Pastrnak opened up about the prospect of becoming the next captain of the Boston Bruins, a position that holds immense significance both for the team and the city. “It’s something that would mean a lot to me,” said Pastrnak. “Being part of the Bruins organization for so many years and having the chance to lead this team would be an honor. But at the same time, I don’t think you can ever expect that. It’s something that has to come naturally.”

Pastrnak has been a vital part of the Bruins’ success since joining the team as a first-round pick in 2014. The Czech forward has developed into one of the NHL’s top goal scorers and a true face of the franchise. His electrifying play on the ice and vibrant personality off it have made him a fan favorite in Boston. Despite his rising star, Pastrnak remains humble about the idea of leading the team.

“It’s not something I actively think about,” Pastrnak continued. “The leadership group we have is really strong right now, and we have a lot of great leaders in the locker room. Guys like Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, and Charlie McAvoy. They’ve been here for a long time, and they’ve shown how to lead in different ways. If the time comes, I’d be honored to step up, but it’s not something I’m pushing for.”

Pastrnak’s self-awareness and respect for the team’s established leadership are evident in his words. Since the departure of Chara, the Bruins have relied on a leadership group rather than a single captain, with Marchand and Bergeron playing pivotal roles in steering the team both on and off the ice. The dynamic between Pastrnak and his veteran teammates is a crucial part of the Bruins’ ongoing success, and Pastrnak recognizes that the captaincy is about more than just wearing the “C” on the jersey.

While Pastrnak’s leadership qualities are unquestioned, his willingness to defer to the team’s veteran presence shows maturity beyond his years. Pastrnak noted that leadership in Boston is not about one individual standing out but rather about a collective effort. “It’s a team game, and leadership is something that is shared by many people. It’s not just one guy. We all need to work together to get the best out of each other.”

As for the fans, there’s no doubt that Pastrnak is seen as a natural leader for the Bruins. His consistency on the ice, along with his infectious personality, has made him a favorite not only in Boston but across the league. Still, Pastrnak knows the captaincy comes with added pressure. “There’s a lot of responsibility, and I’m not sure when or if it will happen,” he said. “But I’ll be ready if that moment comes.”

For now, Pastrnak will continue to focus on what he does best: scoring goals and helping the Bruins contend for another Stanley Cup. Whether he ultimately dons the captain’s “C” remains to be seen, but his approach to leadership — one rooted in humility, respect for his teammates, and a commitment to the team’s success — is exactly what the Bruins need, no matter who holds the title of captain.
