Alabama Football will need starting quarterback clarity before the season begins

Alabama Football Faces Quarterback Uncertainty Ahead of the 2025 Season

As the 2025 college football season rapidly approaches, the Alabama Crimson Tide finds itself in a familiar yet concerning situation: uncertainty at the quarterback position. With the departure of former starting quarterback Jalen Milroe, the Tide’s quarterback battle has become one of the key storylines to watch in the lead-up to the season. For a program as storied as Alabama, where championship aspirations are the standard, the need for clarity at the quarterback position is paramount.

Milroe was a dynamic playmaker during his time under center, but his inconsistency as a passer left questions that Alabama head coach Nick Saban must address. Milroe’s dual-threat abilities were apparent, but as the season wore on, his struggles with accuracy and decision-making became more pronounced. With his exit, Alabama is now looking at a pool of talented quarterbacks who will compete for the starting role, but there’s no clear frontrunner.

The primary contenders include redshirt sophomore Ty Simpson, who was highly regarded coming out of high school and has the arm strength and mobility to thrive in the Alabama offense, and freshman Dylan Lonergan, another highly-touted recruit with impressive tools. Additionally, there is Jalen Milroe’s backup from last season, Tyler Buchner, who transferred in from Notre Dame and has shown flashes of promise but also inconsistency.

Nick Saban is known for his disciplined, defense-first approach, but the success of Alabama’s offense often hinges on the quarterback’s ability to make quick decisions, manage the game, and perform under pressure. The quarterback position is especially critical for Alabama, which has consistently relied on dynamic playmakers to elevate the offense, and last season’s issues at the position highlighted the need for stability in 2025.

Spring practices will be crucial for the quarterback battle, as Saban and his coaching staff work to evaluate each player’s progress. The Tide cannot afford to enter the season with lingering uncertainty under center, especially in a conference as competitive as the SEC. Saban will need to make a decision soon, as Alabama opens the season with a tough schedule that includes high-stakes matchups in the SEC.

As always, the Crimson Tide’s success will rely on the development of its quarterback, and with championship aspirations on the line, securing a starter who can execute effectively will be the team’s top priority.
