The Free Agent Guard the Chicago Bears Need to Target if They Keep Caleb Williams in Mind

As the Chicago Bears continue their rebuilding efforts, securing the future of the franchise is paramount. With rumors swirling about their interest in USC’s Caleb Williams as their potential quarterback of the future, it’s crucial for the Bears to focus on building a strong offensive line to protect their next star. One of the most critical positions they need to address is the guard position.

An often-overlooked aspect of offensive line play, the guard positions are crucial in providing interior protection and opening lanes for the run game. The Bears, who have struggled with offensive line consistency in recent years, need to ensure that any quarterback—especially one as promising as Williams—has the necessary protection to thrive in the NFL.

One standout free-agent guard the Bears should consider is Ben Powers. Powers, who played for the Baltimore Ravens in 2024, has been one of the most reliable and consistent interior offensive linemen in recent seasons. Over the years, he has earned a reputation as a mauler in the run game while also displaying excellent pass protection skills. The Bears need a player who can dominate in the trenches, and Powers fits the bill. Not only would he be an immediate upgrade, but his ability to create running lanes would benefit running back Khalil Herbert and open up play-action opportunities for the quarterback.

Another player worth considering is Ethan Pocic of the Cleveland Browns. Pocic, who’s shown great versatility at both center and guard, offers the Bears flexibility in their offensive line. If the team is unsure about whether to address center or guard first, Pocic could serve as a potential plug-and-play solution, bringing leadership and stability to the unit. His experience in a run-heavy offense under coach Kevin Stefanski could provide valuable insight into developing a more balanced offense in Chicago, benefiting both the running game and the young quarterback.

In addition, the Bears could look at Isaac Seumalo from the Philadelphia Eagles. Seumalo has been part of one of the NFL’s most dominant offensive lines, offering both leadership and physicality. His experience in big games and his ability to help solidify the interior would provide Caleb Williams with the kind of protection he needs to thrive early in his career.

The Bears can’t afford to ignore the offensive line if they’re serious about investing in a future with Caleb Williams. By signing one of these free-agent guards, they can build a foundation that allows their young quarterback to flourish and ensure the success of their long-term plans.
