Detroit Red Wings HC delivers brutally honest take about Dylan Larkin’s performance since 4 Nations break

Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan recently addressed captain Dylan Larkin’s performance since returning from the Four Nations Faceoff tournament. In a 5-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on February 27, Larkin logged 16:44 minutes, recording a -3 rating with one shot on goal. McLellan expressed dissatisfaction with Larkin’s play, highlighting uncharacteristic mistakes and indecision, and emphasized the expectation for more from the team’s leader.

Prior to this, Larkin had showcased his abilities on the international stage during the Four Nations Faceoff tournament, where he contributed one goal and one assist over four games, finishing with a +3 rating. His performance there was lauded, with many considering him one of the team’s standout players.

Reflecting on his decisive goal for Team USA in a 3-1 victory over Canada, Larkin described it as the pinnacle of his career, especially with his family in attendance. Despite earlier missed opportunities, he capitalized on a crucial chance, underscoring his resilience and commitment.

The contrast between Larkin’s international success and recent NHL performances has raised questions about his consistency. The Red Wings’ upcoming games will be pivotal for Larkin to align his play with McLellan’s expectations and reaffirm his status as a cornerstone of the franchise.
