Bubble Watch: North Carolina and Baylor Eye Crucial Road Wins to Strengthen NCAA Tournament Hopes

The battle for NCAA Tournament spots is heating up, and every win counts for teams hovering on the bubble. On Sunday, Nebraska capitalized on its opportunity, securing a critical 79-71 victory over Ohio State in a high-stakes “double bubble” showdown. With that win, the Cornhuskers extended their streak to four games and improved to 5-6 in Quad 1 matchups, boasting key wins over Illinois, Creighton, and Oregon.

Meanwhile, Ohio State’s tournament prospects took a hit. The Buckeyes now sit at 8-10 across the top three quadrants—historically, not an ideal position for selection. Their unique schedule lacks Quad 3 opponents, meaning every game has carried extra weight.

Xavier also saw its tournament hopes fade after an 80-68 loss at Villanova. With seven regular-season games remaining—six of which are against non-contenders—the Musketeers are in must-win territory for an at-large bid.

Key Bubble Matchups on Monday

Monday presents two teams with prime chances to boost their résumés with statement road wins.

North Carolina at Clemson (7 PM ET, ESPN)

The Tar Heels have limited opportunities to secure marquee victories down the stretch, making this game at Clemson a golden chance to notch a second Quad 1 win. Their only other shot before the season finale comes against Duke. Clemson, fresh off a huge win over the Blue Devils, might be vulnerable, and UNC must capitalize.

Baylor at Houston (9 PM ET, ESPN)

Baylor’s tournament case hinges on improving its road record, as the Bears are just 1-6 in Quad 1 away games. Their lone win came against Arizona State, a team unlikely to make the tournament. A victory at Houston wouldn’t be a make-or-break moment yet, but it would be their best of the season.
