Jake Diebler Stresses Big Ten Intensity, Updates Devin Royal’s Injury Status

After a grueling stretch of three road games in four matchups, Ohio State is finally getting a break from traveling. The Buckeyes return home for a three-game stretch, beginning Wednesday against Washington. Sitting at 14-10 and on the NCAA Tournament bubble, head coach Jake Diebler addressed the media on Monday, discussing his team’s progress and areas for improvement.

A key focus of the conversation was Ohio State’s frontcourt, particularly after forward Devin Royal suffered an injury in the first half of their recent loss to Nebraska. Diebler provided an update on Royal’s condition while also touching on the team’s overall approach heading into February.

Diebler on Devin Royal’s Status

Diebler expressed cautious optimism about Royal’s availability for Wednesday’s game but made it clear that his status remains uncertain.

“It’s just too early to tell. But I’m certainly optimistic, hopeful, and prayerful that he’ll be able to go. He’s a tough kid.”

Royal was technically available for the second half against Nebraska, but Diebler and the coaching staff chose to hold him out despite the sophomore’s desire to return to the game. His participation against Washington will depend on his progress in the coming days.

Balancing Pace and Poise

Playing with urgency has been a major focus for Diebler in his first season as head coach. However, he acknowledged that sustaining a high tempo isn’t always feasible, especially when key players like Bruce Thornton log heavy minutes.

“I don’t want to just play fast for the sake of playing fast. I want us to play with great intent. We talk all the time about pace with poise.”

Diebler emphasized the importance of generating transition opportunities through strong defensive play, a point of emphasis as the team looks to build momentum.

Every Big Ten Game Feels Like a Rivalry

While the Michigan game stands out as Ohio State’s premier rivalry, Diebler made it clear that every Big Ten matchup carries intensity—including those against the recently added West Coast teams.

“There are levels, certainly, but every Big Ten game is really like a rivalry game. You just have to fully embrace that—even with these four teams from the West Coast.”

Despite Washington’s last-place standing in the conference, Diebler stressed that the Buckeyes wouldn’t take the Huskies lightly, praising their recent performances.

With a critical home stretch ahead, Ohio State will look to capitalize on the opportunity to strengthen its tournament resume—starting with Washington on Wednesday.
