Here’s how longtime Crimson Tide strength coach Scott Cochran became a Division II head coach….

Scott Cochran, renowned for his dynamic presence as a strength and conditioning coach, has embarked on a new chapter in his coaching career by becoming the head football coach at the University of West Alabama. This appointment marks a significant transition for Cochran, who has been a pivotal figure in collegiate football, particularly within the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Cochran’s journey in coaching began at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he served as a graduate assistant from 2001 to 2002. He was then promoted to assistant strength and conditioning coach, contributing to LSU’s national championship victory in 2003 under head coach Nick Saban. Following his tenure at LSU, Cochran expanded his expertise to the NBA, working with the New Orleans Hornets from 2004 to 2006. In 2007, he reunited with Saban at the University of Alabama, serving as the head strength and conditioning coach. During his time with the Crimson Tide, Cochran was instrumental in securing five national championships, solidifying his reputation as a cornerstone of Alabama’s football success.

In 2020, Cochran made a strategic move to the University of Georgia, joining former colleague Kirby Smart’s coaching staff as the special teams coordinator. His tenure at Georgia was marked by back-to-back national championships in 2022 and 2023, further enhancing his impressive coaching rĂ©sumĂ©.

However, Cochran’s journey was not without personal challenges. He openly acknowledged his battle with opioid addiction, a struggle that led to his resignation from Georgia in February 2024 to focus on recovery. Demonstrating resilience, Cochran co-founded the American Addiction Recovery Association, aiming to support individuals facing similar challenges and to advocate for recovery resources.

On February 3, 2025, Cochran was appointed as the head football coach at the University of West Alabama, a program competing in NCAA Division II’s Gulf South Conference. He succeeds Brett Gilliland, who transitioned to the role of athletic director after a decade as head coach. Cochran’s extensive experience at the highest levels of college football is anticipated to bring a new era of success to the Tigers.

Cochran’s appointment is not only a testament to his coaching acumen but also to his personal growth and commitment to mentorship. His journey underscores the importance of resilience and the pursuit of excellence, both on and off the field. As he takes the helm at West Alabama, Cochran’s leadership is expected to inspire and develop student-athletes, fostering a culture of success and integrity within the  program.
