Former Ohio State DB Tyvis Powell Discusses Notre Dame’s New Defensive Coordinator, Chris Ash

Tyvis Powell, a former Ohio State defensive back who played under Chris Ash during the Buckeyes’ 2014 National Championship season, shared his thoughts on Ash’s return to college football as Notre Dame’s new defensive coordinator. After spending four seasons in the NFL, Ash will take over a Notre Dame defense that has been strong in recent years.

Powell, who was the Defensive MVP in the 2014 National Championship game, highlighted Ash’s impact on his football career. Despite their frequent clashes, Powell praised Ash for being one of the best coaches he ever had, noting how Ash helped him understand the game more deeply. Powell shared a story from his early days under Ash, when the coach taught him to focus on the running back, a detail that improved his play.

Regarding Ash’s teaching style, Powell explained that Ash simplifies complex defensive schemes, making it easier for players to react quickly and play fast without overthinking. This approach helped Powell’s Ohio State defense excel against top players, including Heisman finalist Melvin Gordon.

On the topic of Ash’s defensive philosophy, Powell emphasized that Ash’s game plans are focused on neutralizing an opponent’s best players, forcing teams to win in different ways. This strategy was a key factor in Ohio State’s success during their 2014 title run.

Powell also shared that Ash’s defense typically features a base system that is adaptable, allowing for flexibility when facing various offensive schemes. Ash’s preference for Cover 4 with occasional blitzes and variations such as Cover 2 on third down is expected to be a core part of Notre Dame’s defense.

Finally, Powell expressed confidence that Ash and Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman will align well, particularly in their shared vision of a strong pass rush. Powell believes that if Ash can generate consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks, the entire defense will improve, leading to tighter coverage and more opportunities for turnovers.
