AJ Russell, the ace who was slated to start on opening day, spent much of the season sidelined due to injury and wasn’t able to contribute in the postseason.
In his absence, Tennessee had to adjust by employing an opener on Friday nights and a piggyback starter on Sundays for much of the season.
A true freshman also took over as the starting shortstop, and the Vols relied on a catcher who had struggled offensively the previous year.
Despite these hurdles, the team’s depth, talent, and never-say-die attitude shone through.
The 2024 Volunteers proved that a great team can adapt, overcome, and rise to the occasion when it matters most.

The First Pitch Banquet, held annually to kick off the new season, serves as an important tradition for the Volunteers.
Hosted by John Wilkerson, the Voice of Tennessee Baseball, the event brings together players, coaches, families, and fans for a night of camaraderie and excitement as they look forward to the upcoming season.
This gathering, held just before the start of the season, sets the stage for what’s to come and signals that the team is ready to take the field.
“The banquet is a good chance for us to close the book on last year’s success,” Vitello said. “The players are eager to move forward, and with the incredible support from our fans, I know they’ll be ready to embrace this new chapter. It’s a fresh start, and now it’s time for us to make our own mark.”
As Tennessee prepares to open its 2025 season at home on February 14 against Hofstra, the excitement and anticipation are palpable.
