After Jack Sawyer’s unforgettable 83-yard touchdown in the Cotton Bowl, Texas knew they needed a Hero. Now, they’ve got one Hero Kanu.
The former Ohio State defensive tackle announced Wednesday that he is transferring to Texas for the 2025 season, bringing with him two years of eligibility.
Kanu, originally from Geltendorf, Germany, made his way to the U.S. for his senior year of high school, playing at Santa Margarita Catholic in California. A four-star recruit, he was ranked No. 129 overall and the No. 19 defensive lineman in the 2022 class, per 247Sports.
Despite flashes of potential, Kanu saw limited action during his time in Columbus. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound lineman played just 123 snaps in 2024, recording four tackles. Over three seasons, he totaled 14 tackles and one sack.
With Ohio State losing both Tyleik Williams and Ty Hamilton to the NFL, Kanu’s departure leaves the Buckeyes with a thinner defensive tackle rotation heading into 2025. The battle for starting roles will likely feature Kayden McDonald and Eddrick Houston, with Jason Moore and Tywone Malone also in the mix. Meanwhile, Texas gains a talented lineman eager for a bigger role.
Kanu’s next chapter is set in Austin, where he’ll look to make a lasting impact in the heart of the Lone Star State.
