With Jalen Milroe heading to the NFL after two seasons as Alabama’s quarterback, the Crimson Tide is set to usher in a new era under center.
Redshirt sophomore Ty Simpson, who served as Milroe’s primary backup, stands a solid chance of becoming the starting quarterback for the 2025 season opener. His experience in Tuscaloosa has positioned him as a strong contender.
“You certainly appreciate what he’s done,” Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer commented about Simpson during the Senior Bowl practice in Mobile, Ala. “He has consistently worked on himself, building relationships, and preparing for this opportunity to step up not only as a leader but also as the quarterback.”
Simpson, a former five-star recruit, will face competition for the QB1 spot from 2024 Washington transfer Austin Mack and Gatorade National Football Player of the Year Keelon Russell.
DeBoer remarked on the quarterback trio, highlighting the lack of extensive playing time at the college level. “But I also feel like the skillsets are there, with strong strengths among them. It’s exciting to see their similarities and unique attributes. Their teamwork in workouts has been efficient and productive,” DeBoer added. “I’m excited about what they all bring to the table. Can’t wait to get back on campus in February and work with them.”
As Alabama enters a crucial offseason under DeBoer’s leadership, the competition for the starting quarterback role will be pivotal in shaping the team’s success in 2025.
