The Texas Longhorns are actively pursuing defensive tackle Hero Kanu, who transferred from Ohio State after helping the Buckeyes win the national championship. Kanu, a 6’5, 305-pound rising redshirt junior, visited Texas over the weekend as part of his recruitment, and the Longhorns are hoping to add him to their roster. However, there’s a tight timeline for Kanu decision, as Wednesday marks the 12th class day the final day to register for spring classes.
Florida is also in the running for Kanu, with the Gators making a strong push after his visit to Gainesville. Known for offering competitive NIL deals, Florida could entice Kanu, though a commitment to the Gators would mean missing spring practice.
Kanu, a four-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, was ranked the No. 129 player nationally and the No. 19 defensive lineman by 247Sports. Originally from Germany and raised in California, Kanu chose Ohio State after visits to Georgia, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma.
After redshirting in his first season at Ohio State, Kanu played a more significant role in 2023, recording 10 tackles, a sack, two pressures, and two defensive stops over 123 snaps. Despite limited playing time during the national title run, Kanu’s potential is clear.
Texas has already added two defensive tackles from the transfer portal Cole Brevard (Penn State) and Travis Shaw (North Carolina) but still has needs at the position, with several spots open for competition. Kanu decision will be a key addition to Texas defensive line for the upcoming season.
