Top Contenders for Ohio State Defensive Coordinator Role

Ohio State is in search of a new defensive coordinator after Jim Knowles  unexpected departure to rival Penn State, just days after securing a national championship. Losing Knowles is a significant blow, but losing him to a fellow Big Ten contender stings even more. The Buckeyes now face the challenge of finding a capable replacement, and three candidates stand out as strong options.

1. Matt Guerrieri

Currently Ohio State safeties coach, Matt Guerrieri is a leading candidate for the role. With prior experience as Co-Defensive Coordinator at Duke and Indiana, Guerrieri has proven himself capable of handling the demands of the position. His impact during his first season in Columbus was evident, as the safeties flourished under his guidance.

Seen as the natural successor to Knowles, Guerrieri has already earned the trust of the coaching staff. While he not guaranteed the job, his familiarity with the program and prior defensive leadership make him a strong contender.

2. Jim Leonhard

If Ohio State opts to hire externally, Jim Leonhard could be a prime choice. A former standout player at Wisconsin, Leonhard spent 2017-2022 as the Badgers defensive coordinator, where his defenses consistently ranked among the nation best. His teams achieved top-10 DFEI defensive rankings four times during his tenure.

Currently serving as the defensive backs coach for the Denver Broncos, Leonhard deep understanding of the Big Ten and proven track record make him an attractive option for the Buckeyes.

3. Jeff Hafley

Jeff Hafley brings a unique advantage with his prior experience at Ohio State. He co-led the Buckeyes defense in 2019 before departing to become the head coach at Boston College. Hafley recently joined the Green Bay Packers as their defensive coordinator, but his relatively modest salary could open the door for a return to college football.

While Hafley has indicated a lack of interest in being a college head coach, he may be enticed by the opportunity to rejoin Ohio State as its defensive coordinator, especially with the resources and competitive potential the program offers.

As the Buckeyes look to fill this pivotal role, each candidate presents a compelling case. Whether they promote from within or pursue an external hire, Ohio State choice will be critical in maintaining their championship-caliber defense.
