Is Alabama’s towering 6-foot-6 quarterback, Austin Mack, being overlooked in the Crimson Tide’s current quarterback battle?
Most discussions about Alabama’s quarterback competition have centered on the experienced Ty Simpson and the highly-touted freshman, Keelon Russell. However, Mack, with his impressive frame and potential, is quietly making his case.
The real competition is set to unfold during the spring when all three quarterbacks, including Mack, will have the chance to showcase their skills and vie for the starting position. If past comments from Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer are any indication, Mack is working tirelessly to earn his spot. DeBoer praised Mack’s dedication during the 2024 season, noting, “He’s one of the hardest workers on the team. He’s constantly putting in extra work, often seen practicing early in the morning when there’s no scheduled practice.”
Originally from California, Mack began his college football journey at Washington before transferring to Alabama following DeBoer’s appointment as head coach. In the 2024 season, Mack served as the fourth-string quarterback and saw limited action, playing in just one game. In that appearance against Mercer, he completed two passes for 39 yards, including a touchdown, showcasing his ability to throw an accurate deep ball.
As the spring competition approaches, it will be interesting to see how Mack fares and if he can emerge as a serious contender for the starting role. His hard work and determination certainly make him a player to watch in the Crimson Tide’s quarterback battle.
