Nico Iamaleava drops quote after Tennessee’s win against Chattanooga that confirms suspicion about Vols’ starting QB

In a decisive 35-7 victory over Chattanooga, Tennessee’s backup quarterback, Nico Iamaleava, inadvertently confirmed speculation about the Vols’ starting QB situation. After the game, Iamaleava spoke to the media and hinted strongly that incumbent starter Joe Milton III would be the team’s primary quarterback for the upcoming games.

“I think Joe has shown he’s our guy,” Iamaleava said. “He’s been leading us well, and it’s clear he’s the one we’re rallying around. He’s earned the starting role with his performance and leadership.”

The comment came as a surprise to some, given Iamaleava’s role as a highly touted freshman who has been seen as a potential future starter. His remarks, however, align with recent observations and Coach Josh Heupel’s previous statements that Milton was the leader in the QB race heading into the season.

Joe Milton III, a veteran with significant experience, has been the subject of much discussion this season. While his performances have been inconsistent, Heupel has consistently supported him as the starter. Milton’s experience and the trust Heupel has placed in him have been pivotal in solidifying his position, despite the potential of younger talent like Iamaleava.

The Vols’ win over Chattanooga showcased a well-rounded team performance, with Milton completing 17 of 25 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Iamaleava, on the other hand, saw limited action, which only served to fuel speculation about the depth chart.

As Tennessee looks ahead to tougher opponents, the clarity surrounding the starting quarterback role may bring stability to the team. Iamaleava’s endorsement of Milton appears to be a strategic move to support the current leader and maintain team cohesion as the Vols prepare for their upcoming challenges.
