Collingwood fans were left grinning from ear to ear as club ‘legend’ and cult figure Bryan “Strauchnie” Strauchan made a triumphant visit to Adelaide this week — proudly carrying the AFL Premiership Cup through the city streets in trademark comedic style.
The iconic fictional footballer, created and portrayed by comedian Peter Helliar, is a beloved character among AFL fans — especially Magpie supporters who fondly remember his tongue-in-cheek antics on Before the Game. Known for his self-proclaimed “star power,” lack of on-field fitness, and endless confidence, Strauchnie’s return to the public eye had footy fans in stitches once again.
Clad in full black-and-white gear, complete with the famous number 29 on his back, Strauchnie paraded the Premiership Cup around Adelaide Oval and Rundle Mall, drawing huge crowds and plenty of laughs. Fans lined up for selfies, with many shouting “Go Pies!” as Strauchnie posed, flexed, and made mock-serious speeches about being “the real reason behind Collingwood’s recent success.”
> “It’s great to finally bring the Cup back to Adelaide, where I was this close to signing for the Crows… before Collingwood begged me to stay,” Strauchnie joked. “I’ve been training hard — mostly my right arm from holding this Cup all day — but it’s worth it for the fans.”
The visit was part of the AFL Premiership Cup Tour, which takes the silverware around the country to celebrate Collingwood’s most recent triumph. While the official tour has featured stars like captain Darcy Moore and coach Craig McRae, Strauchnie’s involvement added a light-hearted twist that delighted both kids and adults alike.
Even Adelaide fans couldn’t help but enjoy the spectacle, with many admitting that the comedian’s energy and quick wit brought back memories of the golden days of AFL comedy. One supporter quipped, “He might not have kicked many goals, but Strauchnie’s done more for Collingwood’s image than most real players!”
During the event, Strauchnie also took time to “inspire the next generation,” staging a mock coaching clinic for local junior players. His “training tips” — including advice like “never run if you can walk with confidence” and “remember, the ball will come to you eventually” — had the crowd in stitches.
Behind the laughter, though, the visit carried a genuine message of connection. The Magpies’ decision to include a comedy icon like Strauchnie in their celebrations highlighted the club’s understanding of its broad supporter base — one that thrives on both success and a strong sense of humour.
Collingwood’s 2024 Premiership win marked one of the most dominant campaigns in recent memory, and this tour continues to strengthen the bond between the team and its fans nationwide.
> “It’s been a joy to celebrate with the people,” Strauchnie said with mock humility. “I’ve always said, footy’s not about fame or fortune — it’s about looking good in black and white and making sure everyone knows your name.”
As the sun set over Adelaide Oval, the crowd’s laughter echoed across the parklands — proof that even in victory, Collingwood still knows how to have fun. And with Strauchnie leading the charge, the Premiership Cup has never shone brighter — or been funnier.
