AFL fans are sending their well-wishes to Mick Malthouse after the coaching legend was injured in an attempted home invasion. The Herald Sun revealed on Thursday that Malthouse fought off the would-be robbers, who were trying to break into his apartment in Melbourne
The former Collingwood and West Coast coach said he heard three masked men trying to break in during the early hours of Thursday morning, and chased them down a stairwell with an old exercise bar in hand. Malthouse said the robbers were armed with a crowbar and screwdriver.
“There were three blokes on the other side (of our door) with a bit of weaponry,” he told the Herald Sun. “I was able to get through and force them down the stairs with a little bit of interest on the way down
“There was a fair bit of action. One tried to jab me (with the screwdriver) and only partially succeeded. He tried to stab me in the chest, so I’ve got a mark on my chest and they whacked my arm a couple of times.”Malthouse sustained minor injuries in the ordeal, while wife Nanette has been left shaken. “Nanette is doing it pretty hard, it’s taken its toll,” Malthouse said.Police said in a statement: “Officers were called to the property following reports of a group of men trying to gain access about 12.30am. A resident of the property chased the offenders to a nearby laneway, where he was assaulted. The offenders fled on foot.”
The 72-year-old said the people of Melbourne are “sick to death” of the rising crime rates. “I’m OK, I’m just angry that I wasn’t able to do a bit more actually,” he said.
