Provo, Utah – In one of the most remarkable homecomings in BYU history, the Cougars welcomed back one of their most iconic alumni, Andy Reid, as he officially returned to the university in a brand-new role: General Assistant Manager. The announcement was made during the BYU University Awards Gala, turning an already prestigious evening into an unforgettable chapter in Cougar athletics.
Reid, fresh off cementing his NFL legacy with multiple Super Bowl titles as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, shocked the sports world by accepting a leadership role back at his alma mater. The BYU community erupted in cheers when the news broke from the stage, with the crowd giving Reid a standing ovation that lasted several minutes.
“This is home,” Reid said, visibly emotional as he took the microphone. “I’ve been blessed beyond measure in the NFL, but the values, lessons, and spirit I carry with me all started right here at BYU. To come back and contribute to the Cougar family in this way is something truly special.”
The role of General Assistant Manager is a newly created position designed to strengthen BYU’s athletic operations, mentoring student-athletes, advising the football program, and building stronger ties between the university and the broader sports world.
BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe praised the move as historic:
> “Andy Reid is not just a coach—he’s a leader of men. His return marks a new era for BYU athletics. His wisdom, experience, and passion for this university will shape our future for decades to come.”
The gala featured a highlight reel of Reid’s journey from a Cougar offensive lineman in the late 1970s, to his decades of NFL coaching dominance, to his triumphant Super Bowl victories with Kansas City. But for many in attendance, the most powerful moment was watching him step back onto the stage—not as a guest, but once again as part of the BYU family.
Reid closed the night with words of encouragement to BYU’s student-athletes:
> “Dream big, work hard, and never forget where you came from. BYU is more than a place—it’s a family. I’m proud to be back in it.”
As the crowd roared and the BYU marching band played, one thing was clear: Andy Reid’s legacy has come full circle. From Provo to the NFL and back again, his journey continues—this time with a mission to guide the next generation of Cougars.
