Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel addressed the media after the Vols wrapped up their second preseason scrimmage, and much of the conversation centered on the ongoing quarterback competition.
Heupel acknowledged that each quarterback has shown progress but emphasized that consistency remains the biggest factor in the evaluation process. He noted that while there were positive flashes from multiple players during the scrimmage, the staff is still looking for someone to separate from the pack in terms of decision-making, accuracy, and command of the offense.
Joey Aguilar, who transferred in with experience, has continued to build momentum, showcasing poise and strong situational awareness. Freshman phenom George MacIntyre has also drawn praise for his natural talent and ability to stretch the field, though Heupel cautioned that he is still adjusting to the speed and complexity of the college game. Meanwhile, returner Gaston Moore remains a steady presence and provides depth with his knowledge of the system.
Heupel stressed that Tennessee won’t rush the decision, pointing out that finding the right leader at quarterback is about more than just physical ability. “It’s about earning the trust of your teammates, protecting the football, and being able to move this offense at the pace we want,” he said.
While Heupel didn’t set a firm timeline for naming the starter, the competition appears to be narrowing. With just a few weeks until the Vols’ season opener, the pressure is on for one signal-caller to solidify his claim to the role. For now, the position battle remains open, but Heupel’s comments suggest that clarity is on the horizon.
