5 College Football Coaches on the Verge of Being Axed: Luke Fickell Leads the Pack

Buckle up, folks! The heat in the college football world isn’t just from the blazing sun or the fiery rivalries—it’s coming straight off the coaching seats that are practically sizzling. The 2024 season has wrapped, but for some head coaches, the post-season isn’t a time for relaxation—it’s a time for restless nights and whispered rumors. And leading this high-stakes game of musical chairs? None other than Wisconsin Badgers’ head coach, Luke Fickell, whose seat is hotter than a summer day in Death Valley.

Luke Fickell’s Wisconsin Dream Turning into a Nightmare

When Luke Fickell took the reins of the Wisconsin Badgers in November 2022, expectations soared. Fans envisioned a new era of dominance, with visions of championship runs and packed trophy cases dancing in their heads. But instead of glory, Fickell delivered… mediocrity. The Badgers stumbled to an uninspiring 5-7 finish in the 2024 season, and their 13-13 overall record under his leadership has left fans scratching their heads, wondering, “Where did it all go wrong?”

The wounds are even deeper considering the lopsided losses to age-old rivals like Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota. These defeats weren’t just losses—they were embarrassments. And as the Badgers faithful cast their minds back to the Paul Chryst era, where beating Nebraska was practically a given (Chryst was 6-0 against them), the contrast is stark and painful. It doesn’t help that Fickell is pocketing a cool $7.7 million annually while delivering subpar results. The once-proud Wisconsin program seems to have lost its shine, and fans are growing restless.

But Fickell isn’t alone in this pressure cooker. He’s joined by four other head coaches who are feeling the flames lick at their feet.

The ‘Scorching Hot Seat’ Club: Who Else is Feeling the Burn?

On February 5th, All College Football turned up the temperature by sharing the College Football Report’s latest “Hot Seat Tiers” on Instagram. In this fiery table of doom, coaches were categorized from ‘Icemen’ (cool and safe) to ‘Scorching Hot Seat’ (one step away from the chopping block). Unsurprisingly, Fickell found himself in the latter, but misery loves company, and he’s not alone. Joining him in the inferno are:

  • Brent Venables (Oklahoma Sooners): In his third season, Venables led the Sooners to a dismal 6-6 regular season. The fan base, known for its high expectations, is growing impatient. Mediocrity isn’t in Oklahoma’s DNA, and Venables might be running out of second chances.
  • Mike Norvell (Florida State Seminoles): Just last year, Norvell had the Seminoles flying high with an ACC championship and a stellar 13-1 record. But 2024 brought them crashing down to earth with three consecutive losses to unranked teams. The fans are wondering if 2023 was a fluke.
  • Hugh Freeze (Auburn Tigers): The Tigers limped to a 5-7 finish, punctuated by an embarrassing 17-7 home loss to Vanderbilt. The Auburn faithful demand excellence, and Freeze’s underwhelming performance isn’t cutting it.
  • Sam Pittman (Arkansas Razorbacks): The Razorbacks’ trajectory under Pittman has been a rollercoaster—with more downs than ups. After a 7-6 record in 2022, they fell to 4-8 in 2023 before bouncing back slightly to 7-6 in 2024. But fans have seen enough of this inconsistency and are clamoring for change.

While the drums of discontent beat louder in Wisconsin, there’s a twist in Fickell’s tale. Jesse Temple, a well-respected Wisconsin beat writer for The Athletic, suggests that Fickell might still have some runway left. According to Temple, the university is likely to give him four full seasons to prove his worth. But with fans losing patience and performances declining, that might feel like an eternity in the high-pressure world of college football.

John Buhler, a college football analyst for Fansided, isn’t mincing words when it comes to Fickell’s tenure. “I am very concerned about Luke Fickell’s staying power at Wisconsin… Over the last two years, Fickell has devolved into a painfully mediocre Power Four head coach,” Buhler wrote. Ouch. When experts start using words like “mediocre,” you know the clock is ticking.

But firing Fickell isn’t just a simple you’re out! It’s a financial landmine. Back in 2022, Fickell inked a seven-year deal, and just last year, he signed an extension that locks him in through March 31, 2031. The buyout? A jaw-dropping $40.2 million, making it the 13th-highest in Division I. That’s not exactly pocket change for Wisconsin. But the Badgers aren’t strangers to making costly decisions. In 2022, they waved goodbye to Paul Chryst, shelling out $11 million in the process. So, the real question is: Are they willing to break the bank again?

Final Whistle: Will Wisconsin Pull the Trigger?

The saga of Luke Fickell and the Wisconsin Badgers is teetering on the edge of a dramatic conclusion. Will the university give him the time (and money) to turn things around? Or will they decide that enough is enough and send him packing, no matter the cost?

One thing’s for sure: the 2025 season is shaping up to be make-or-break for not just Fickell, but for Venables, Norvell, Freeze, and Pittman too. The countdown has begun, and in the cutthroat world of college football, the margin for error is razor-thin. So grab your popcorn and keep your eyes on the sidelines—because some coaching careers are about to get torched.
