Four standout players from the University of North Carolina baseball program have been selected in the 2025 MLB Draft, marking a significant milestone for the Tar Heels and further solidifying their reputation as a pipeline for professional talent.
The first off the board was junior outfielder Marcus Taylor, who was selected in the second round by the Chicago Cubs. Known for his combination of power and speed, Taylor had a breakout junior season, batting .335 with 18 home runs and 24 stolen bases. His athleticism and defensive versatility made him one of the most intriguing outfield prospects in this year’s class.
Next was starting pitcher Jake Simmons, who went in the fourth round to the Seattle Mariners. Simmons, a right-hander with a mid-90s fastball and a devastating slider, was the ace of the Tar Heels’ rotation. He finished the season with a 2.89 ERA and 112 strikeouts over 93 innings, showcasing his ability to dominate in high-pressure situations.
In the sixth round, shortstop Eli Martinez was selected by the Boston Red Sox. Martinez brought consistency and leadership to UNC’s infield throughout the season. A slick defender with a reliable bat, he hit .308 with 12 home runs and drove in 50 RBIs, making him a well-rounded prospect.
Finally, senior reliever Kyle Bennett was taken in the ninth round by the Miami Marlins. Bennett, known for his bulldog mentality and clutch performances, posted a 1.95 ERA with 10 saves, proving to be one of the most reliable arms in the ACC.
